Earth Day Celebrations at Linnaea Farm Education Centre
April 21 & 22, 2018

Cortes Island Museum & Archives Society (CIMAS) and partners, invite you to a weekend celebration on … the wild side of Cortes Island! Location: Linnaea Farm.

CIMAS has partnered with Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI), Forest Trust for the Children of Cortes Island Society (FTCCIS), Discovery Islands Ecosystem Mapping (DIEM) and Linnaea Farm Society (LFS) to create a dynamic interpretive centre to inspire and support environmental education on Cortes Island. Come out and meet the partnership; hosted table exhibits from each of the partner organizations for your perusal.
Open House 10 am – 4 pm Saturday & Sunday

Our Wild Side weekend is time to show off… your wild side!
FTCCIS youth invite you to dress-up as your favourite wild animal, plant or mineral for the weekend; at work, at play – everyone and everywhere! Youth will be manning a table at the Manson’s Friday Markets to get you inspired, assist with costume design and biological details! Great prizes for the wildest in several categories… Go Wild!

Saturday, April 21
10 am – 12 pm FOCI Heron Steward Training; join Ministry of Environment (MOE) researchers, Connie Retzer Miller and Jenna Cragg for infield training to document nesting sites on Cortes Island of the Great Blue Heron, a species at risk in BC. Orientation at Linnaea Education Centre and then carpooling to field site (~10min away).

2 pm – 3:30 pm FOCI Species at Risk Citizen Science Project Launch
Join us to learn about species at risk on Cortes and how YOU can help monitor them!
MOE’s Connie Retzer Miller gives us an update on the state of the Great Blue Heron in coastal BC and how the Cortes community can assist with documentation.
MOE’s Jenna Cragg will then give us an update on the status of the Marbled Murrelet in/ around Cortes Island; new satellite telemetry work and marine habitat utilization.
Jenna will also discuss why the western screech owl and western toad are at risk.

Sunday, April 22
10 am – 12 pm Youth Activities & Nature Based Games with FTCCIS.
Meet at the Linnaea Education Center and dress for play in the surrounding forest lands.
10 am – 12 pm Bird Watching at Linnaea Farm w/ George Sirk; bring binos!

2 pm – 4 pm Ceremonial Opening of Cortes Wild! with tea & decadently wild desserts!
Grand opening for our exciting new exhibit space, which gives a permanent home to the well-loved Wild Cortes display, curated by taxidermist Laurel Bohart. Selections from past natural history displays will also be featured, including the very first CIMAS display from 1998 – A Celebration of Manson’s Lagoon. Everyone Welcome!
